Stories that lie beneath
I recently read in article in "Florida Weekly" titled "Stories that Lie Beneath". Anyway, I found the article to have great significance to our region because of its evaluation of historical grave sites in Lee, Collier, Glades and Hendry Counties. I would like to discuss all of the stories as they were extremely interesting however there was one that stood out to me. It was a section on the Rosemary Cemetery in Naples. This cemetery borders Pine Ridge Rd. and a strip mall. The story mentioned the movement of bodies from one area to this area as well as unmarked graves. What I want to know is is it right for people to move the dead and build on top of them. Also, I wonder how many people even know it's there. Its certainly an interesting piece of history, but not a proper way to treat the dead.

Moving the dead or burying on top of the dead is a very touchy subject. Many horror movies have been made about what happens when you disturb the deceased. Native Americans have strong beliefs about not disturbing the resting place of a dead person. Me personally, I think that that a person's body should not be moved from their gravesite until four generations of their family have also died. That way, anyone with an emotional connection to the dead person will have long been dead.
